Year 6 The Ickabog by JK Rowling

In English Year 6 have been immersed in all things JK Rowling. We have started a new English unit based around The Ickabog by JK Rowling, which follows on from our Advent Term work on Harry Potter.

The unit focuses on emotions, recognising and finding appropriate ways to deal with our emotions and those of others. We are thinking about how to enhance our emotional well-being, especially in the current climate with COVID. Alongside the actual story we are looking at poetry, in particular performance poetry which connects to expressing our emotions.

The boys imagined what The Ickabog may look like, before reading Chapter 2, they prepared drawings using the vocabulary to guide their imaginations. We then researched gargoyles, focusing on Maltese gargoyles. We learnt that the reason the mouth of the gargoyle is open is not actually to make them look scarier, it was originally created in this way to project the water from rainfall away from the building and protect the façade of the buildings.
