First Day of College

The College grounds were clothed in a cool, morning breeze. Silence reigned, broken only by the soft whispering: the leaves and trees, you see, were gossiping, eagerly anticipating The Great Return. For this morning, the boys came back to College. They trickled in at first, in ones, sometimes in twos. Occasionally you got siblings with an older brother showing the ropes to a younger child. Parents gathered outside the school gates. All anxious. All eager. All proud of their children and happy to be back into the winter routine. The amount of preparation has been staggering. It's simple to say 'restrictions', quite another to implement them while making sure that the full benefits of the educational process are there for the students. Education is not just the learning parts of academia; that's the simple bit. Education is learning about problems and solving them, knowing when to lead and when to follow, feeling responsible for the welfare of your fellow humans. That's the tough part. That's the part many opt never to learn. That's where St Edward's College excels. For some it was the very first day: students at post Secondary level, studying for the IB diploma mainly since the kinder pupils started yesterday. For others it was the first day in Big School. After an eight-year journey through kinder and junior school, these students entered middle school. No longer children yet not yet adults, this transitional time is a sensitive one for them and for their parents. We are well aware of that at College which is why we work closely with the parents. We encourage dialogue since parents may feel isolated when facing a problem: it is more than likely that the teachers would have encountered that problem several times before. So, at the start of the new scholastic year, St Edward's College would like to wish all students, pupils, teachers, staff and parents a productive and successful year.
