Sports

At St Edward’s College, physical development begins from the earliest years of schooling. From their very first days at the College, our youngest pupils are introduced to organised physical activities and guided play, laying the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of movement and well-being. Our early physical education programme focuses on the development of fundamental locomotor skills, including running, jumping, hopping, and balancing. Children are gently guided through structured sessions that enhance their body awareness, spatial awareness, and coordination. Through engaging activities such as gymnastics, rhythmic movement, and age-appropriate games, students learn how to move with control, confidence, and purpose. Beyond the physical, these sessions also encourage teamwork, listening, and cooperation, helping children build social and emotional skills in a playful and positive environment. At St Edward’s, we believe that strong physical foundations contribute to the overall development of the child, fostering not only fitness, but also focus, resilience, and joy.

Building Healthy Habits

At St Edward’s College, we view sport as an essential part of early childhood education. From Nursery to Year 3, physical activity is integrated into the daily routine, helping children develop not only strength and coordination, but also confidence, discipline, and teamwork.

Through a variety of age-appropriate sports and games, students are introduced to the joy of movement in a fun and supportive environment. Activities include basic athletics, mini football, gymnastics, simple ball games, and movement-based challenges designed to improve balance, agility, and motor control.

These early experiences help children understand the value of fair play, persistence, and a healthy lifestyle. Sport also plays a vital role in supporting mental focus, emotional regulation, and social skills – all of which contribute to success in and out of the classroom.

Our goal is to install a love of sport that stays with our students for life.

Various Disciplines

From Year 4 upwards, students continue to refine their skills through a variety of sports, building on the foundation set in earlier years. This development process continues throughout Middle School, where students are introduced to a broader range of disciplines. At this stage, they focus on enhancing their advanced motor skills through sports such as hockey, baseball, cricket, volleyball, basketball, football, handball, touch rugby, tennis, and athletics.

A key aspect of the Middle School sports programme is the introduction of School Team training sessions, which provide students with the chance to hone their abilities further in specific sports. Here, pupils can pursue their sporting passions by joining one of the college teams, offering a structured path to excellence.

Inter-school competitions are held regularly, giving students the opportunity to compete against other schools, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie. Additionally, Inter-house competitions further encourage students to challenge themselves, while positively challenging their competitive drive and teamwork. Through these experiences, students not only develop their athletic abilities but also gain valuable life skills such as discipline, resilience, and collaboration.

Fitness Screening

At St Edward’s College, we are committed to supporting the overall well-being of our students, and fitness screening is a key part of this effort. As part of our holistic approach to health and development, we regularly assess the physical fitness of students to ensure they are on track with their growth and physical capabilities.

Fitness screenings are carried out in a supportive and non-competitive environment, using age-appropriate tests to measure strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. These assessments help identify areas of improvement, as well as highlight individual strengths, allowing us to tailor fitness programs that promote healthy habits and physical development.

Beyond tracking physical progress, fitness screenings also encourage self-awareness, goal-setting, and the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle. By regularly monitoring fitness levels, we can support students in achieving their personal best while fostering lifelong health and fitness habits.
