Headmasters Message 14

Good Afternoon All,

Remember the words and phrases that we used so often in the past, ‘Usually’ ‘Normally’. ‘In the past’. ‘What we did last year was…’ ‘It is customary’, ‘traditionally’, ‘In the old days … ‘ these are all relegated, NOW, to the past. All of us have been dealing with the ‘new normal’, forging ahead and inventing and improvising as best we can.

In this Gazette you will see the ‘new normal’ for the inter-house cross-country and our mid-term tests/exams.

We also have some of the ‘old normal’ with reports on Young Parliamentarians, Ekoskola, and some other great activities that our students are involved in.

Inter -House Cross-Country.

It is a pleasure to watch this video. Not only does it highlight the boys but also the wonderful grounds that are St Edward’s.

Congratulations to Mr. Ferrante and the SEC Sports department, backed up by Mr. Bonnici (drone pilot), Mr. de Maria, (photographer) and Mr. Galea, (Director and Editor)

This year, the races were ran on different days/times, and students competed in their own ‘bubble’. Well done to all participants!! Enjoy Inter-House Cross-Country. Tests/Examinations/Mocks.

At St Edward’s college we traditionally had many checks and balances in the production of exam/test papers. Whilst aiming to maintain these very high standards we also have had to keep to the forefront of our thoughts the level of risk with COVID.

Use of digital versions of papers has helped a lot but there still arise issues when using digital media when dealing with charts, graphs, pictures, tables, and the like. We resolve these as we come across them.

We have also adjusted our handling of physical papers, gloves and a 72 hour quarantine of the papers are the order of the day.

And this is my point – there is no instruction manual, there is no reference text or source which we or anyone else, can pull off the shelf, nor lookup on the net. There is no set of procedures nor practices that we can use to refer to.

Like so many we are creating this ‘new normal’, day by day. I must say that it is admirable the manner in which teachers and our students are managing, being adaptable and flexibly and most importantly understanding that we are all transitioning from the ‘old normal to this ‘new normal’.

Have a good weekend.
