Focus on fine motor skills

At St Edward’s College, we place great emphasis on fine motor development for our Early Years students. Fine motor muscles, just like any other muscles, develop over time and young students especially need to use them periodically to strengthen them. Activities whereby students are encouraged to manipulate objects during their play and craft making help develop such skills.

Practise makes perfect and these activities are incorporated within each day at College. Teachers present a variety of tasks and activities which aim to support fine motor skills development and encourage the pupils to be independent in their trials. Blocks play, using scissors/ pegs/ tweezers, and using cotton buds/toothbrushes/paintbrushes and more are excellent tools. Ultimately, these are the skills and hand manipulation that students will need to develop their pencil grasp and have the strength to manipulate a writing tool.
